In Exodus 1:1-22 (NIV), Pharoah is so fearful of the Israelites that he orders the midwives to kill all boy babies at their birth. “The midwives; however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live” (Exodus 1:17, NIV). The action and decision of the midwives illustrate moral courage.
Choosing Higher Authority
The midwives faced a critical decision. Obey Pharaoh’s earthly authority or Honor God’s divine authority. The midwives fear of God overrides Pharaoh’s directive. Their choice demonstrates that true power flows from moral courage, not position.
Understanding Real Influence
Two types of power are illustrated in this story: Pharaoh’s power and Midwives’ power. Pharaoh’s power is based on force and fear, temporary and fragile as well as demanding and not respected. Midwives’ power is built on moral courage, sustaining through respect and earning through service.
The Currency of Influence
The midwives illustrate the meaning of real power. Real power manifests through connection with people, moral integrity, consistent character and service to others.
Lasting Impact vs. Temporary Control
Pharaoh ruled by inherited authority while the midwives led through earned influence. Their story is a testament that position doesn’t equal power, influence outlasts authority and character creates legacy.
Building Sustainable Power
To develop lasting influence, stand firm in your principles, choose moral courage, build genuine connections, and serve with integrity. True power isn’t about controlling the room—it’s about touching hearts and minds, inspiring others toward ethical action and authentic service.
I leave you with this final thought. This week, identify one area where you can lead with integrity rather than authority. What small action can you take?
