The Promise in Transitions

“Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them – to the Israelites” (Joshua 1:2, NIV).

The Israelites are in a period of transition.  After forty years of wandering in the wilderness  under Moses’ leadership, the moment of fulfillment arrives. Yet Moses who led them out of Egypt would not be leading them into Canaan.

The Promise Transcends the Person

God’s timing often surprises us. Israelites had to face a transition.  Crossing into the threshold of the Promised Land required losing their beloved leader. This critical juncture reveals a profound truth –   God’s promises transcend human lifespans. The divine plan will continue even when some travelers in the journey depart.  This speaks to individuals being for a season and a lifetime.  Not every person in your circle will be with you on the path for your life journey.

Different Seasons Require Different Leaders

There is a transition of leadership from Moses to Joshua. This transition reveals how God strategically positions individuals for different seasons. Moses and Joshua were two different individuals, each with a unique gift.  Moses key talent is diplomacy.  His diplomatic approach was perfectly suited for negotiating with Pharaoh and establishing Israel’s identity as a nation. His leadership was essential for their wilderness journey—a time of preparation and formation. Joshua key talent is a being a military commander.  A military commander with strategic vision.  He possessed the qualities needed for battles to come for the Israelites to claim Canaan.

Embracing Necessary Change

The leadership transition from Moses to Joshua is a reminder that change, though often painful, is necessary for progress. The Israelites could not cling to Moses’ methods if they wanted to experience the fulfillment of God’s promise. They needed to embrace new leadership and new strategies.

The Resistance to Transition

Reflect on how often you resist change, preferring the comfort of familiarity and established methods. You bemoan having to adapt. Transitions are God’s mechanism to move you forward. Keeping your focus on what is constant – God.  God said “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Joshua 1:5, NIV). God’s presence remains unchanged even others depart from your circle. God’s promises do not expire with transitions. His word stands firm.  The promises continue, withstanding change.

Reflect on these final two thoughts

Will you have the courage to cross your Jordan when the time comes embracing the transition?  What will it take for you to cross your Jordan?
