In Joshua 9, the Israelites are taking over the Promised Land. They are euphoric. Emotions are running high. They are celebrating their major victories in conquering the people of the land. God’s promise is coming to be a reality. One tribe of the land, the Gibeonites were concerned and worried about their survival. They knew the key to their survival was forming an alliance with the Israelites. To secure an alliance, they were deceptive. Deceived the Israelites on who they were and where they lived.
The Deception
The Gibeonites approached the Israelites appearing homeless and hungry. The Gibeonites dressed in rags and ate stale bread for food. They appeared to be people suffering. Requiring the need of help and protection. The Israelites fell for the ruse, making a treaty with the Gibeonites.
Failed to consult the Spirit
The Israelites made the treaty with Gibeonites based on sight and emotions, failing to consult the Spirit. Much to their chagrin they discovered that the Gibeonites were actually rich and their neighbors. They jumped the gun.
Make informed decisions
Include the Spirit in the decision process. The Spirit reveals information needed to make an informed decision. Do not make a decision solely based on emotions and physical senses. The senses can lead you astray. Resulting in a rash decision that will have repercussions. Don’t make rash promises, and don’t be hasty in bringing matters before God. After all, God is in heaven, and you are here on earth. So let your words be few. -Ecclesiastes 5:2 You have been gifted and equipped with the Spirit to be your counselor and guide. And I will ask the Father, and he will send you another Counselor to be with you forever. He is the Spirit of truth. -John 14:16-17 The Spirit provides truth and wisdom.
