“As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming when no one can work”(John 9:4, NIV).
Jesus reminds us of the urgent call to fulfill purpose while there is opportunity. Time is the most precious and finite resource. It waits for no one. This means embracing the gift of today and eliminating distractions.
The Gift of Today
Each morning brings fresh opportunity. The “day” in John 9:4 represents not just literal daylight, but the season of opportunity that is given. Windows of possibility do not remain open indefinitely. The “night” eventually comes through changing circumstances, diminishing health, or ultimately, the end of your earthly journey.
What matters is not how much time you have, but what you do with it. You receive what you produce. Your harvest directly correlates to plantings. The question becomes: Are you investing your time in activities that align with your God-given purpose?
Eliminating Distractions
The world excels in distracting you from what truly matters. Social media, endless entertainment, and even well-meaning family or friends can pull you away from your core mission. You must choose which is your focus.
This doesn’t mean becoming antisocial or abandoning relaxation. Rather, it’s about intentionality. It is making conscious choices about where your energy flows instead of letting others dictate your priorities. Sometimes, the bravest word you can say is “no” to what doesn’t serve your purpose.
The Three Pillars of Maximizing Time
The application of this scripture stands out with three essential qualities:
Consistency – Small, daily actions aligned with your purpose compound over time. Sporadic bursts of productivity cannot replace steady dedication.
Determination – Obstacles will emerge. The determined spirit sees these not as roadblocks but as growth opportunities. When challenges arise, remember why you started.
Courage – Following your divine calling often means stepping beyond comfort zones. It requires the courage to stand apart, challenge conventions, and persist when results aren’t immediately visible.
The work assigned to you is uniquely yours. No one else can fulfill it. By embracing these principles with an unwavering commitment to your purpose, you honor not just your gifts but the Giver who bestowed them.
The day is still bright. What will you do with it?
