See Beyond Sight Gaining Spiritual Vision

An army surrounds the city of Dotham. Elisha’s servant is frightened at seeing the army so he is overwhelmed with fear. While Elisha sees beyond the immediate danger. He states “Don’t be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them” (2 Kings 6:16, NIV).

Elisha’s response challenges us to consider the broader perspective of spiritual sight versus physical sight. Elisha prays stating “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see” (2 Kings 6;17, NIV). He is not asking for a literal change in the servant’s physical eyesight but a spiritual revelation of God’s presence and power.

The Limitations of Physical Sight

Physical sight is utilized for navigating the world. The human eye has finite capabilities in terms of range, acuity, and depth perception.  Peripheral vision is less acute with focus limited to what is directly before you. These physical constraints influence how you perceive and interpret your surroundings placing limits on perception.

Perspective Beyond Physical Sight

Beyond physical sight lies a realm of broader cognitive and psychological factors that shape your perspective. Your past experiences, beliefs, and cultural backgrounds all contribute to how you interpret what you see. This subjective nature means that two people can witness the same event yet perceive it differently based on their unique perspectives.

Elisha’s Perspective of Faith

Elisha’s perspective is not based on sight but faith, belief, and hope in God’s power. He sees beyond the immediate threat because of his trust in God’s promises and providence. This allows him to reassure his frightened servant with confidence in God’s protection and sovereignty.

The Servant’s Initial Fear

The servant’s perspective is clouded by fear and doubt. Fear and doubt cause his reaction to be shaped by what he physically sees. His focus is on the encircling enemy army rather than trusting in God’s unseen spiritual reality. Elisha’s prayer for the servant’s eyes to be opened was a call to shift his focus from the physical threat to God’s greater spiritual truth.

Appreciating the Complexity of Human Perception

Understanding these dynamics helps you appreciate the complexity of human perception. While physical sight is indispensable, acknowledging its limitations prompts you to seek spiritual insight and discernment. Recognizing God’s presence and purposes beyond what your physical eyes can perceive enables you to navigate life with faith, courage, and wisdom. Consciously train your mind to see with the Spirit, looking beyond what is in front of you, cultivating spiritual vision that shapes and deepens your perception.
