Rebuilding Requires Priorities

In Haggai 1:1-12, after a seventy year exile the Jews return to Jerusalem with the divine purpose of rebuilding the Lord’s temple. Initially, they faced fierce opposition from neighbors who sought to prevent the reconstruction. However, the greatest threat to rebuilding the temple is not external resistance but internal – indifference.  “This is what the Lord Almighty says: “These people say: “The time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord’s house” (Haggai 1:2, NIV). The people gradually shifted their focus to working on their own personal dwellings and livelihoods.

The Contradiction Between Faith and Action

The prophet challenges this misalignment: “Is it time for you yourselves to be living in your in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?” (Haggai 1:4, NIV). While claiming to honor God, they prioritized personal comfort and success above their obligations to God. Their actions directly contradicted their professed beliefs.

Their contradictory behavior leads to unexpected outcomes. “You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it ” (Haggai 1:6, NIV). Despite their hard work, the returns on their inputs were diminished and there is persistent dissatisfaction.

Recalibrating Priorities for Purposeful Living

The message of Haggai is not new.  Your priorities determine whether you live with purpose and fulfillment. When you place personal gain above spiritual growth and community responsibility, you find yourself working harder while achieving less.

“Give careful thought to your ways” (Haggai 1:7, NIV) is God’s response. God invites self-examination and a recalibration of priorities to support realizing the desired outcomes. You must keep your focus on the big picture, not immediate gratifications, easy results and pleasing people. God provides the remedy.  He says “Go up to the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored” (Haggai 1:8, NIV).

Like the returning Jews, you face the constant challenge of maintaining proper priorities in a world of distractions. When you align your actions with your deepest values, you open yourself to genuine fulfillment that transcends material success. As you build your personal “temples” of purpose, you must ensure that your daily choices reflect what you truly believe matters most.

Call to Action

Take time this week to examine where your time, energy, and resources are truly being directed. Make a list of your current priorities, then honestly evaluate whether these align with your professed values and deeper purpose. Reflect on these questions. 1 – What is your ‘temple’ that needs rebuilding? 2 -What ‘paneled houses’ might be distracting you?

Choose one area where you can realign your actions with your beliefs and commit to making that change.
