Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion: The potential for greatness lives within each of us.

In 1 Samuel 8, Israel was discontent with the present government, anxiously sought change asking for a king to be their ruler.  The people stated to Samuel “thou art old, and thy sons do not walk not in thy way. – 1 Samuel 8:5     It was true that Samuel was old; however, he was wise and experienced thus qualified to govern the people.    Hmm, sounds familiar to what our country had been facing with the recent presidential election.

Israel sought to be like all the other nations that had a king instead of Judges.  God appointed Judges to be his conduit to govern and lead his people.  Judges who received their call and commission directly from God.  Through the Judges, the affairs of the nation were under divine government.  Israel failed to see what was before them and who they had with them, Almighty God.  With God, there was no need for a king.  However, they sought a physical presence instead of a spiritual presence, someone who could outwardly display power.  What is misunderstood is that the outward appearance of man is from God who is our creator.   The people stated “there shall be a king over us, so that we may too be like all the other nations that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.” – 1 Samuel 19-20.  They wanted to be like the Joneses missing out on what was clearly before them and who was with them.  The focus should have been following their own path. Israel consistently lost sight of all that God had done. God delivered them from Egypt, gifted them with a land overflowing with milk and honey, fully stocked with all that they needed and then some.  There was no need to be like the Joneses.

Seeking to be like another and desiring what another has is wasting time and energy – a distraction.   Distractions cause you not to be focused on what you need to be doing to fulfill your purpose and the reasons for accomplishing the reason of your existence.  Distractions lead to detours, possibly leading to pain and hardship which is what occurred for the people of Israel.

Look within yourself, use what you have been gifted and are being provided.  Desiring to be like another or having what is theirs, will cause you to miss out on that which is for you.  You have what you need and the resources for you to be successful and impactful. Don’t seek to be like the Joneses, forge your own path, be like, and embrace you.
