Fireworks are lighting up the summer sky as we gather to celebrate our nation’s independence. I ask that you reflect on a deeper form of freedom—one that transcends political liberty and touches the very core of our being.
“Who will bring any change against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who the is the one who condemns? No one.” (Romans 8:33-34, NIV)
The Paradox of Independence
In our culture, independence is celebrated as the ultimate achievement. We strive to be self-sufficient, autonomous individuals who “need no one.” However, social media contradicts this mindset. Validation is sought based on likes and comments to measure one’s worth by the approval of others. True independence does not mean isolation but rather means freedom from being controlled by the opinions and validation of other people.
Contemplate these questions. How many decisions do you make based on what others might think? How often do you adjust your life to fit the expectations of those around you? This is not independence—it’s invisible bondage.
The Path to True Freedom
It is God who justifies not individuals. Put your efforts in seeking his approval. For he holds authority over your eternal destiny. This Independence Day, I invite you to consider this paradox: true independence comes through dependence on God.
Anchoring your identity in God’s unchanging love and approval, leads to finding freedom from the exhausting pursuit of human validation. You discover liberation from fear—fear of rejection, fear of failure, fear of not measuring up.
Breaking the Chains
How do you live this counter-cultural freedom?
- Recognize whose opinion truly matters. While community is important, only God’s perspective is perfect and eternal.
- Measure success by faithfulness, not popularity. Living according to divine principles rather than shifting cultural values provides stable ground.
- Draw strength from dependence on God. Spiritual independence flourishes when rooted in dependence on divine guidance.
A New Declaration
This holiday, as you celebrate our national independence, also declare a spiritual independence—freedom from the tyranny of human opinion and the liberating truth that in surrendering to God, you find your true self.
True freedom doesn’t mean answering to no one; it means answering to the right One.
