In a world increasingly divided by self-interest, it is imperative for individuals to cultivate inclusivity and compassion to create a more equitable society. Every person is created in God’s image. That means that God is not one race or one gender.
Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV) states “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
This means that you are to embody humility and empathy in your interactions with others. It is up to you to be inclusive which means embracing a mindset that is open-minded, teachable, empathetic, and loving. Let’s break down the application of this scripture.
Application
Open-Mindedness: Recognizing and respecting diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences. Rather than clinging rigidly to your own views be receptive to new ideas and be willing to learn from others.
Teachable: Willingness to learn from those who are different from you. This requires humility to admit that you do not have all the answers and that others’ insights and experiences are valuable. By being teachable, you create opportunities for mutual growth and understanding.
Empathy: Ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. When you empathize, you step into someone else’s shoes, seeking to comprehend their joys, struggles, and perspectives. This fosters genuine connections and promotes a culture of respect and compassion.
Love: Be grounded in love. Love transcends boundaries and bridges divides. It compels you to treat others with kindness, respect, and dignity, regardless of differences. Love motivates you to actively pursue the well-being and interests of others, fostering a sense of belonging and unity within our communities.
The Challenge
Applying these four principles encourages you to set aside your own agendas and prioritize the needs and concerns of others. It encourages you to cultivate a culture where everyone feels valued, heard, and respected. Inclusivity isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a transformative practice that enriches your relationships and strengthens community. It brings you closer to living out the ideals of compassion and unity that resonate throughout history and across cultures.
I challenge you to put this scripture into practice. Inclusion starts at home not outside the home. It begins at the kitchen table.
