Jesus directs the disciples to go ahead of him into Gennesaret.  He stays behind to meditate and pray on a mountainside. The disciples are battling against the winds and turbulent waters.  Jesus approaches them walking on the water.  The disciples are terrified upon seeing him.  Jesus immediate reassures them stating “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid” (Matthew 14:27, NIV).

Peter responds with a bold request “Lord, if it is you, tell me to come to you on the water” (Matthew 14:28, NIV). Jesus uses one single word “Come” (Matthew 14:29, NIV).

The Moment of Truth

Peter gets out of the water, walking on the water.  For a brief, miraculous moment, Peter accomplishes the impossible through pure faith. What happens he turns from Jesus, to instead look at the wind, becoming afraid. Peter cries out to Jesus for help. Jesus immediately reaches out to him, saving him.  Jesus says “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:31, NIV).

Living Beyond Limitations

Like Peter, you face situations that require you to step out of your comfort zones.  Your boat of security to venture out into the unknown.  Whether pursuing a dream, facing a difficult conversation, or making a life-changing decision, you are constantly challenged to walk on your own “water.”

Jesus gives you a clear message. You have the authority and ability to walk on water. The greatness within you is capable of achievements that seem impossible when viewed through the lens of doubt.

The Three Elements of Water-Walking

This scripture identifies three essential elements for overcoming doubt and accomplishing the seemingly impossible:

  1. Obedience – Peter didn’t jump impulsively; he waited for Jesus’s command.
  2. Surrender – He released his grip on security and trusted in something greater.
  3. Faith – Most importantly, he believed—if only momentarily—that the impossible was possible.

When you incorporate these elements into your life, you equip yourself to overcome doubt and walk confidently through your most challenging circumstances. Having faith, being obedient and surrendering enables you to tap into the potential that is within you. Enabling you to walk into your unknowns, getting out of the boat to walk on the water.
