Our world is full of distractions. Distractions from phones constantly pinging with notifications enticing scrolling on social media to be consumed with endless streams of content competing for attention, and the demands of daily life pulling in countless directions. Hebrews 2:1 (NIV) state “We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.”
What is most important in these words is the concept of “drifting away” – which anyone who has ever been in a boat understands. Without an anchor or consistent attention to navigation, a vessel will naturally drift with the currents. Passengers do not notice being off course until they find themselves far from their intended destination.
Following the Evidence of Truth
Hebrews 2:1 urges you to “pay the most careful attention” to what you hear. This isn’t about passive listening but active engagement with truth. Wisdom or guidance resonates with truth that calls you to examine it carefully, test it, and hold fast to what proves genuine.
Evidence matters. You live in a time of misinformation and competing narratives making it essential to have discernment. Just as a ship captain uses stars, maps, and instruments to stay on course, you must use reliable evidence and proven wisdom to guide your journey through life.
Avoiding the Currents of Doubt
Doubt isn’t always negative – healthy questioning can strengthen convictions. However, when doubt becomes a persistent state rather than a temporary process, it can act like a subtle current, that slowly pulls you away from your foundation without being aware. Drifting is gradual. Abandoning core values and beliefs do not happen suddenly. It is the result of neglect and inattention leading to gradual movement away from what is held dear.
Living with Purpose and Direction
The antidote to drifting is intentionality. By consciously choosing to pay attention to truth, you set a deliberate course rather than being carried along by whatever current happens to be strongest. Living in purpose means regularly checking your position against your intended destination. Checking to see if you are aligned with core values. Moving in the direction of your destinations. Regular navigational checks help ensure you remain on course. Remaining anchored to truths that move you toward living a life of meaning and authentic purpose. It is vital to chart your course so that you do not merely drift with the tides.
