John 14:12 (NIV) Jesus states “Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these.” These words speak to spiritual growth through belief, authority, courage, and empowerment.
The Power of Belief
The foundation of this verse begins with belief. A deep trust that transforms your very identity. When you truly believe in Christ, you begin to see yourself as He sees you. A child of God with divine potential. This belief becomes the catalyst for everything that follows.
Walking in Authority
Christ’s ministry demonstrates divine authority over sickness, nature, and spiritual forces. Jesus transfers his authority to believers. This authority is not about personal power but about representing God’s kingdom on earth. Just as an ambassador carries the authority of their home country, you carry heaven’s authority when operating in Christ’s name. This authority isn’t earned through merit but received with aligning your will with God’s purposes.
Cultivating Courage
Doing “greater things” requires courage. It is willing to step beyond your comfort zone to act despite uncertainty. After Jesus’ death the disciples performed miracles and spread the gospel across continents, facing persecution and death. Their actions required tremendous courage grounded in the absolute conviction of Jesus’ identity and promises. This same courage is available to you. Use it to empower you to confront injustice, love sacrificially, and stand for truth when it is unpopular.
Embracing Empowerment
God empowers his people through the gift of the Holy Spirit who equips believers for extraordinary service. Jesus beseeches you to do even greater works. There is no competition because you are extending Jesus’ reach. He is a proud papa waiting with anticipation and great joy for you to do even “greater things.” By understanding that your empowerment comes from God, you remain humble while acting boldly, knowing your capabilities flow from His presence within you.
Your Greater Works Begin Today
What “greater works” is God calling you to accomplish? Take time this week to reflect on areas where you’ve hesitated to step out in faith. Identify one concrete action you can take to exercise the authority Christ give you. Perhaps it’s praying boldly for healing, speaking truth in a difficult situation, or serving someone in a way that stretches your comfort zone. Remember, the same power that worked through Jesus now works through you. Don’t wait for perfect circumstances or complete confidence. The time for action is now. Share your commitment with a trusted friend who will encourage and hold you accountable. The world is waiting for believers who will take Jesus at his word and do the greater things he promised.
Will you be one of them?
