In Acts 12:1-19 (NIV), Peter is surrounded by sixteen guards awaiting trial and execution. What is Peter’s response to this situation? His response is sleeping peacefully. Demonstrating his trust in God’s power. Outside the prison, the believers are praying earnestly to God to help him. God answers sending an angel, rescuing Peter from prison. Peter exits the prison, walks to Mary house to reconnect with the other believers of the church.
Prayer Meets Surprise
The woman opens the door and to her astonish she is looking at Peter. Her immediate reaction is to close the door in Peter’s face, leaving him outside. Peter remains outside of the house with the woman running to immediately tell the others who immediately doubt her words. She insists that it is Peter, to which they respond, “It must be his angel” (Acts 12:15, NIV). The people pray for Peter’s release and then struggle to believe their answered prayer. Their astonishment reveals a gap between their prayers and their expectations.
The Paradox of Praying Faith
The believers pray earnestly yet are amazed at the answer. This paradox teaches that there is a difference between hoping and believing, praying without expectation and that faith moves beyond requests to reception.
God’s Power Released Through Belief
Divine intervention aligns with authentic faith, expectant prayer, God’s sovereign will and active belief. True belief expects God’s intervention, recognizes His power, aligns with His will and receives His answers. Divine intervention and true belief results in living in expectant faith. Living in expectant faith provides access to God’s power. This means that you pray with conviction, expect divine response, recognize answers and act on belief.
