In Luke 10:38, Martha invited Jesus to her home becoming engrossed in making preparations. She was busy performing domestic tasks. Her sister Mary instead of helping, chose to sit at the feet of Jesus. Her focus was on being a student and taking advantage of the opportunity to be in his company. Mary chose listening and learning while Martha chose to serve. Martha believed that Mary should be helping instead of lounging at the feet of Jesus. She was concerned about what was not necessary while the one thing that was necessary, she neglected.
Martha complained to Jesus about Mary not helping. Jesus responded “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one, Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” –Luke 10:41
As with Martha, do not become distracted in pursuing that which is not necessary hindering your growth and development. Reflect on times you have missed opportunities to learn or develop due to focusing on that which is not necessary. Be vigilante in capitalizing on growing, learning and developing which will add value to you.
